Plyo-X

Did the Plyometrics DVD. Good to know that my legs remember at least some of their training from spring racing, even if my aerobic fitness is pretty sad. Had to keep pausing, but did the whole enchilada. Yeah, I brought it.

Brought it, then bought it.

Tony said to pace myself. Not sure how I could have. In the shape I’m in (read bad) set after set of related exercices on the same muscle groups pretty much guaranteed there was no second run through. I couldn’t even hold myself up on my knees in pushup position by the time the first round was done. I was shaking like a dog.

Perhaps I’ll loop back through week one, or maybe just dial back the reps and add some rest at the top of the movements when it gets nasty. Anyway, here’s the awful truth:

push 15 pull wide 10 on chair mil push 10 chin 8 on chair wide push 10 narrow pull 10 on chair incline push 4 heavy pants 15@ 20# diamond push 4 on knees lawn 15 @20# divebomber 0 back fly 10 @20#

Like tuning a drum head

Pretending that an hour of stretching a couple of days before taking up the road to fitness (again) is going to make it hurt less later is probably folly, especially since just stretching hurts so much now. I was not unlike tuning a drum head–stretching, wrenching, painstaking trouble accompanied by much noise.

Billy Grey ride

The boys and I rode the Billy Grey Ride for brain tumor research today in Saratoga Springs, NY. There were 10, 25, and 50-mile loops. We rode the flat 10 miler, which was remarkable only for the huge number of people who came out and for the fact that it was Gabe’s first ride on the road and the longest distance he’s ever gone on a bike. Not bad for an 8-year-old. I was very proud. It was Liam’s second year for the ride, and he did a wonderful job, too.

Matt and I decided to ride home from Saratoga. It was glorious and chilly with swirling winds and a couple of good, hard town-line sprints, which Matt won handily. I was excellent to seem him back in form after a rough crash earlier this spring.

What a fantastic day.

First Proper Road Ride of the Season

A most welcome thaw earlier in the week cleared most of the ice from the roads and shoulders, making a ride in Saturday’s 35-degree sunshine seem almost civilized. I’ve had a few minutes last month out on the State Office Campus–think giant corporate park with concentric loop roads–but today was my first ride in months out on the real road, this time in rural Albany County, where the riding is always a pleasure. Matt and I took nice long turns on the front, maintaining tempo, and occasionally contesting the odd hill and town line. Glorious! Can’t wait for the time change so I can ride outside more often.

Ah, right. Air.

Today brought the first outdoor ride of the year. Forty degrees–you couldn’t get away from all of the degrees, that’s how many there were–brought exactly no other contenders to the New York State Office Campus, a 2-mile loop of relatively flat, well-paved, always plowed, modestly trafficked, 3-lane roadway and usally a winter training favorite among cyclists and runners. This afternoon, it was just Matt and Joe, rolling in zone two, talking trash and catching up. I was not sufficiently layered and ended up with numb extremities after 45 minutes, so I called it, but damn, it was good to breath real outside air.
